Dreamcatcher

Theme / Programming

As I’m a bit tired, as I was still a bit in Turkey by a corner of the heart, it’s the dream catchers that came back to me.
In a store in France, people find it weird and pretty. And that will be all.

But in Turkey, this object has much more meaning and value.

So, from what my friends in Turkey have told me, the dream catcher serves to capture our nightmares – so that they don’t come back and especially so that they don’t come true.
It is more or less the same legend that surrounds this object in the United States (but there, I have no source except the internet).
It is thus absolutely necessary to have this object not far from one’s bed, so that our bad thoughts, our too dark and terrible dreams get stuck in the threads of the dream catcher.
Already I had found this very nice as a legend.

But that’s not all:

From what an old friend had told me, it was an object remaining from shamanic rites, which were and still are very much practiced in some parts of Turkey.

This is where Altair comes in, because this friend had allowed me to see some – Turkish – shows that were totally astonishing and extremely impressive.

And that’s where the draft comes in – I’ll probably rethink this idea – because this dream catcher is also very present in the United States. Here I am in mental transhumance from one continent (two – Turkey is on two continents) to the other, from European-Asia (yes perfectly – go to Istanbul on this infernal bridge that connects the Asian bank to the European bank, and tell me that Turkey is not sitting on two continents! And don’t worry,… you will have plenty of time to understand that you are moving from one to the other) to the Americas.
As I have never set foot in the United States, I have no idea what shows, if any, are related to this object and shamanism.

But there has to be. Well, I hope so.
And it would be absolutely wonderful to have a show theme that would connect, through dream-catchers, those continents that think they are so different. No ?

Of course, just now I can’t find the names of the artists who impressed me the most – it’s a rough draft.

I’ll talk later about all the other wonders I’ve found in Turkey, in terms of shows…. And especially the masculine and ultra-virile dances. Well, these men… they are… really strong.

    1. 🙂 Thank you for your valuable feedback.
Perhaps then you can tell me if it is correct to think of proposing this as a show? – What bothers me is the real spiritual dimension and I don’t want it to become something “false” – I would like to share, through art, spirituality: but I know it’s a delicate point. Merci encore. Barbara

  2. First of all, I felt humbled after reading my blog name and your lovely comments about my blog content. Thank you. It is been a blessing to have found you and your blog in this giant world of bloggers. Secondly, I’m happy to have inspired you with a comment to get a new part of the Istanbul trip with you. Yay!
I relate dreamcatchers to Native American people and not to Turkey. However, as saphilopes stated, Turkish culture is a melting pot of multiple traditions, religions, and ritual practices. Shamanism is one of them. The blue eye or evil eye is definitely tied in with the Turkish tradition and culture. So, the dreamcatcher with the evil eye is a First Nation – Turkish Nation – Fusion to me.
But to make this fusion a bit spicier, I will tell you this: I do have a dreamcatcher in my bedroom. It was a gift from a dear Korean girlfriend of mine, whom I met in Canada, and while she was visiting her Turkish friend in Germany, she gifted her (me) this beautiful dreamcatcher, whom she had bought in France, the country where she is currently living. A nice fusion, isn’t it? It is perhaps this type of melting that creates a balanced existence.
