Long and hard working day today – so I’ll do in the short and hopefully efficient one.
Have you heard of Cross-Play?
This is first of all for video game players
And then right after the video game companies
And then of course – Altair – because, damn, I’ve been repeating the same thing over and over for over two years, and still, sometimes when I find a treasure, I like to say it.
I was reading, yesterday I think, an interview with Tim Sweeney, boss of Epic Game, and developer of the famous Fortnite.
I talk about this game quite often, don’t I?
Which started out as a hell for its creators, and it didn’t work, and we didn’t believe in it, and blah, blah, blah, patati et patata, it’s always the same song, it’s a saw – do you say that?
In this interview, this guy, who has flair, you can’t take that away from him, said, guys, cross-play is the immediate future of video games.
Is that okay for the article’s endorsement? my reference is serious, I think. Yes mister, I’m a serious girl.
Hmm…finally, I’m tired, so the “short and efficient” will be another day.
So Cross-Play is the fact that players from many different consoles get together to play online.
Sony resisted like mad – their PS4 was too good – the game was too risky. In 2018, out of the question, nobody would play like that – a break between Fortnite/Epic Game and Sony.
Finally, it was a drunkard’s break as we say in France – because in the end, look on the net, Sony has accepted the Cross-Play.
Doesn’t that mean anything to you yet?
That was the crucial step: getting console manufacturers to open their games via the Internet.
Which means that if players can play together, via their different consoles, on the server of a game… they will be able, via Altair’s server, to join their different games on their different consoles : Altair Twin, it’s the same way, but in the other direction.
It was palpable in 2018 – when many of us started dreaming about the general and somewhat complicated mechanism of Altair.
It is irretrievable in 2021.
I told you that Altair Twin was basically a Steam, but in 3D, with a little more fun anyway.
The problem was accessing the games – and their various consoles.
The major problem was accessing the consoles – well, that problem is behind us, the old-fashioned console war is over. I’m not panicking, it will continue in other ways.
Access to video games is another problem – when you look at it from a distance.
But as soon as we manage to create links with video game companies, with Virtual Reality experiences first, with DLC-sidequests or atmosphere and then with e.sport shows&tournaments, there won’t be a problem there either.
And frankly, frankly, every time I look at what the Fortnite‘s guys are doing, I tell myself that they’re the ones to work with first, because they’re not crazy and they’re not back to the old world, when a game was jealously guarded by its developers.
We’ve really changed the relationship between “consumers” (players, spectators, listeners) and entertainment creations. If you want to make sure of that, go and talk to young people aged 15 or 16: they watch movies in streaming and they download their music – and now they play believing that the game is free: in short, they’ve broken down the barriers. It was easy, the internet leads to it naturally.
Of course, we can always cry over the death of our old world, when everything was so well guarded.
Let’s cry a little.
And then let’s move on, we don’t care about any of this – there are now enough models that have shown that it wasn’t these structures that alone brought the money into the pockets.
